The Saucy Sisters

Hi!  I'm Beverly, the second-born in our family.  For 10 years, I was the "baby" of the family, until Mom and Dad "decided" to have a third child - our brother, Jeff.  Then, I became the "middle child."  Which position I enjoyed - or played  - best is certainly juicy fodder for the psychiatrists, but I loved both - and used each to my advantage whenever possible.

There's no doubt, though, that following Barbara was tough for a girl in her formative years.  Barbara was beautiful, thin, smart - and blonde.  I was definitely not blonde.  Being two years younger and going to the same schools became tiresome for me.  Always being compared to my "perfect" older sister and often called "Barbara" in class was enough for a girl to want to defect.

Which I did!  A few weeks before returning to the same all-girls school with Barbara, I asked my parents if I could attend the public high school.  Being understanding and brilliant parents, they said, "Yes!"  Looking back, I also realize that I wanted to be around BOYS!

Trying to distinguish myself from my sister was smart - and stupid.  I tried to be as different from her as possible - especially during my brief "Asian Days," when I died my curly brown hair black and wore off-white pancake makeup and heavy black eyeliner  - the latter which only made my blue eyes bluer.  Even my good girlfriends disowned me.

Only after high school and college did I admit how much Barbara and I were alike.  Arriving in Washington, D.C.l as a new college graduate with an intriguing "top secret" job at the CIA, I was eager to get together with my sister again.  After coercing her to meet me in Georgetown for a short shopping trip, we ended up at Clyde's drinking "Chablis" (any white wine of the time).  After our second glass we looked at each other and just knew.  We were sisters, so connected, so alike, yet different - but with a bond and love that only a sister can give.

I won't bore you with my moves, careers and men over the next couple decades.  There were many.  But I did follow Barbara and Paul when they moved to Nashville from Los Angeles.  Fortunatey for me, this is where I met the love of my life - my husband, Marc.  In 2009 this Brooklyn-born girl married the most wonderful Southern boy at the Waldorf in New York City, the same place where my parents had their wedding dinner in 1947.

Marc and I move between our homes in Nashville and Highlands, North Carlolina - where he lived for the last 15 years.  We have two cats, Mimi and Rudolpho, named after the two lovers in the opera, "La Boheme."  I tell everyone I meet how fortunate we are to have each other.  It gives girls young and "old" hope for love and partnership.

Marc can only tell you what it's like to be married to a Saucy Sister.  I'm sure he and Barbara's husband, Paul have had many a discussion and occasional lament.

But sisters, best friends - and saucy we are.  My big sister, Barbara, and me.
